After a lackluster start for the Buckeyes throughout the first 4 weeks of the season, many are wondering if they are deserving of being named the number one team in the country. The quarterback situation has had a negative effect on the team. When your team is unaware of who the leader of the offense is, its expected that the team will struggle. However, last week against Western Michigan was a step in the right direction as Cardale Jones had a solid game and showed promise. Urban Meyer seems to have given the starting spot to Jones for good and the hope is that he picks up where he left off at the end of last season. Jones is perceived as the better option for this team because of his arm strength and his stature. J.T. has been somewhat injury prone and thats why naming Jones is a safer bet because he is more likely to stay on the field. Also Jones’ ability to sling the ball down the field gives them a threat that J.T. doesn’t offer.
While the quarterback situation was a problem, it wasn’t the only thing that left people scratching their heads. The offensive line play has been mediocre, to say the least. Whether it was Jones or Barrett, they barely had time to make throws inside the pocket therefore, they had to create plays while scrambling from defensive linemen. Even Ezekiel Elliot isn’t exploding through the offensive line as he once was (even though he has still performed very well which shows how high expectations are for him this year). It is early in the season and they were in the same situation last year. They were struggling and trying to figure out their identity. But the difference this year, is that they are defending a national championship and all of the pressure that comes with that. People are not expecting them to be in close games with the Northern Illinois’ of the world. Meyer will have his team ready to play against Indiana this Saturday, but anything short of a blow out and they may not hold the number spot come Monday.
With that being said, I do not believe that Ohio State is the best team in the country at the moment. Other teams have played very well and have played tougher opponents. For example, teams like Ole Miss and Michigan State are more worthy of the number one spot according to their resume and who they have beat so far. Maybe moving down in the rankings can be a wake up call for Ohio State. I do not think they will move out of the top spot but I think it would benefit their team and take some of the pressure off the team as a whole. I expect a superb performance from the Buckeyes as they open up Big Ten play. Final score: OSU 42, Indiana 3.
